A successful result belongs to the exact microphone, output, permission state, and software configuration you tested. Switching to a Bluetooth profile, surround output, virtual mixer, or different input can change the outcome.
Run a controlled microphone test
Download the demo only from YeahMaybe’s official itch.io page. Connect the intended microphone before opening it and begin with normal stereo headphones or speakers.
- Close calls, recording tools, voice changers, and virtual audio software.
- Use the operating-system recorder to capture and play ten seconds of speech.
- Open the demo and select that same input.
- Record a short phrase at a comfortable level.
- Play the saved result—not only the live monitor.
- Note silence, clipping, the wrong device, or a switch after launch.
- Repeat only after changing one setting.
Keep the test phrase and microphone distance consistent. If a test suddenly works, that discipline helps identify the setting that mattered.
If the demo records silence
Return to the operating-system baseline. Check microphone permission for desktop apps, the physical mute switch, selected input, and whether another program has exclusive control. Disconnect unused capture devices and close software that adds surround, spatial audio, noise processing, or virtual channels.
The developer has specifically discussed a game-engine recording issue on some multi-channel configurations. Try a plain stereo output before reinstalling the microphone or game. A visible waveform with silent playback is different from no input at all; record which condition you see.
If the demo works but the full game does not
Use the same stable game version, input, output, and audio software state as the successful demo. Launch the unmodified game without custom packs. If the base recording works, add packs one at a time. If it fails immediately, compare device selection and version before altering content.
A voice pack changes source prompts, not the system microphone. Default content working while one pack is silent points toward that pack’s media or metadata rather than the input hardware.
Demo versus development mic build
The No Gameplay Demo tests compatibility. The separately labeled 0.5.2-dev2 build tests a possible developer change. Preserve the stable 0.5.1 folder, record its result, and use the development build only as a second controlled comparison.
Do not replace the stable group-session copy simply because the development number is higher. If the dev build improves capture, keep the device names and results so they can support a useful report to the developer.
What the free options do not include
